Here’s what happened…
Recently, Washington state governor Jay Inslee decided to offer his help to Eastern Washington which has been ravaged by the wildfires by gifting baskets of apples from his own orchard. The apples were later found out to be infected with apple maggot larvae.
Apparently, the area where Inslee lives is an apple maggot quarantine area which meant “it was illegal for Inslee to bring homegrown apples from that area to a non-quarantine area like Douglas County.”
Inslee expressed his regret stating, “Last week Trudi [Inslee’s wife] and I wanted to express comfort for the communities suffering from devastating fires. When I visited some of these areas, I took some apples we picked from our tree in Olympia. We regret this mistake. This is a good reminder of the importance of awareness around apple quarantine. We appreciate the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s efforts to help recover these apples and we are assisting to help make that happen.”
A basket Inslee gave was taken and tested which revealed the apple maggot larvae, however, an additional basket that was left at a church has not been found.
